Emergency Contraception

This service is available via an appointment in the Emergency  clinic at the surgery, GU Medical at St Mary's Hospital or any local pharmacy. Emergency contraception consists of one pill that contain a high dose of the contraceptive pill, progesterone. The pill is taken in one dose up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected intercourse. However it's effectiveness is reduced the longer the delay in taking it. It is important to note that emergency contraception is not an alternative to regular use of an effective contraception.
